One of the most common questions I hear from new parents is when they should be scheduling photos during their baby’s first year.
There is no single moment that matters most. Each stage offers something completely different, and together they tell the full story of your baby’s first year.
Understanding what changes month to month makes it much easier to decide what you want to capture and when.
If you’re planning ahead, this guide will walk you through each stage so you can choose what feels most meaningful for your family.
If you’re planning your own session, I’d love to help you design something timeless.
Newborn (0–3 Weeks)

The newborn stage is quiet and slow. Babies are still adjusting to the world, and most of the session focuses on gentle posing and natural connection.
This is when you capture the smallest details, including curled hands, soft expressions, and the way your baby fits perfectly in your arms.
Most families schedule newborn sessions within the first two to three weeks after birth, but older newborns can absolutely still be photographed in a beautiful and meaningful way.
You can learn more about what to expect from a newborn session here:
3–4 Months

This stage is often overlooked, but it has its own kind of beauty.
Babies are more alert and beginning to engage with the world, but they are not yet sitting or moving independently. Expressions are softer and more observational.
Some families choose to document this stage, especially if they want a more complete record of the first year.
6–9 Months (Sitter Stage)
This is one of the most popular stages to photograph, and for good reason.
Babies are typically sitting independently, smiling easily, and engaging directly with the camera and their parents. Their personalities begin to come through in a very clear way.
Sessions during this stage tend to feel light, interactive, and full of expression.

9–11 Months
At this point, babies are often crawling or pulling up to stand.
There is more movement and curiosity, which can create a very different kind of session. Images at this stage often feel more dynamic and playful.
For families who want a mix of personality and movement, this can be a meaningful time to schedule a session.
First Birthday
The first birthday is both a milestone and a celebration.
Some families choose a classic portrait session, while others incorporate a cake smash or styled setup to mark the occasion.
This is a moment that naturally feels bigger, not just because of your baby’s growth, but because of everything your family has experienced during that first year.
If you’re considering a birthday session, you can explore those options here:
Choosing What Matters Most to You

Not every family chooses to photograph every stage, and that is okay.
Some prefer to capture just the newborn and first birthday. Others are drawn to the sitter stage because of the personality and connection it brings.
The most important thing is choosing the moments that feel meaningful to you.
If you’re unsure where to begin, milestone sessions are designed to help you document these stages in a way that feels cohesive and intentional: Milestone Sessions
A More Complete Way to Document the First Year
For families who want to capture more than one stage, there are options that allow you to document the full progression of your baby’s first year.
This creates a set of images that show not just how your baby looked, but how they changed over time.
You can learn more about that approach here: The First Year Collective
What You Take Away From the First Year

The first year moves quickly, but each stage leaves something behind.
The stillness of the newborn phase. The connection that begins to build. The personality that starts to shine through.
When you look back, those differences matter more than you expect.
Capturing even one or two of these stages gives you something to hold onto as everything continues to change.
