Top Mistakes to Avoid Before a Cake Smash Session on Long Island

Cake smash sessions are joyful, messy, and full of personality. They are also one of the most misunderstood milestone sessions parents book.

By the time families arrive at my Manhasset studio, most have spent weeks planning outfits, worrying about reactions, and wondering if their baby will even touch the cake. The good news is that most cake smash stress comes from a few very common mistakes that are easy to avoid with the right preparation.

If you’re planning your own session, I’d love to help you design something timeless.

Mistake #1: Booking the Session Too Close to the Birthday

One of the biggest regrets I hear from parents is booking their cake smash too late. When sessions are scheduled right before a birthday party, there is no flexibility if baby is under the weather or simply not in the mood.

The sweet spot is typically 3 to 6 weeks before the birthday. This allows time for gallery delivery, ordering prints, and enjoying the images without pressure.

If you plan to use photos for invitations or decor, earlier is always better.

Mistake #2: Choosing an Outfit Without Considering Comfort

While themed outfits can be adorable, stiff fabrics, tight waistbands, or unfamiliar textures can derail a session quickly.

Babies this age are learning independence. If something feels restrictive or scratchy, they will let us know.

In my studio, families have access to curated cake smash outfits designed specifically for comfort, movement, and photography. These pieces photograph beautifully while allowing babies to crawl, stand, and explore freely.

Mistake #3: Expecting a “Perfect” Cake Smash Reaction

Not every baby smashes the cake. Some gently poke it. Some need encouragement. Some want nothing to do with it at all.

All of these reactions are normal.

The goal of a cake smash session is not the cake itself. It is capturing your baby’s expressions, curiosity, and personality at this fleeting stage. Whether the cake is demolished or barely touched, the images will still tell a beautiful story.

Mistake #4: Overcomplicating the Theme

Themes are fun, but too many colors, props, or competing elements can overwhelm a one-year-old.

The most successful cake smash sessions focus on one cohesive idea, a limited color palette, and intentional styling. This creates images that feel elevated now and timeless years from now.

Simple does not mean boring. It means thoughtful.

Mistake #5: Skipping a Clean Set or Splash Option

Some parents hesitate to include a clean portrait or splash portion, assuming the cake smash alone is enough.

In reality, these moments often become client favorites.

Clean portraits highlight your baby’s expressions before the mess, while splash images bring movement and joy into the gallery. Together, they create a fuller story of the milestone.

Mistake #6: Forgetting the Big Picture

Cake smash sessions are not just about turning one. They are part of your baby’s visual legacy.

When styled with intention and photographed with continuity in mind, these images transition beautifully into albums, framed wall art, and heirloom keepsakes that grow with your family.

Many families pair cake smash sessions with milestone photography throughout the year to create a complete first-year story.
