How to Prep for Your Baby’s First Photo Session

ree

That first photo session with your baby is one you’ll remember forever. Whether your little one is just weeks old or starting to sit on their own, these portraits mark the beginning of your family’s story together. The best part? With the right preparation, it can feel calm, joyful, and beautifully simple.

Timing Is Everything

Schedule your session when your baby is typically happiest usually in the morning, right after a nap and feeding. Babies are at their best when well-rested and full, so plan to arrive at the studio about two hours before their usual naptime.

If your baby is under three months, I’ll guide you to the ideal window for capturing sleepy, swaddled poses. For sitters and milestones, I focus on those bright-eyed smiles and little bursts of personality.

Bring the Comforts of Home

A few familiar comforts can make a big difference. Bring along your baby’s favorite snack or bottle, their lovey or blanket, and a few small toys that make them smile. I always keep soothing items and backup props in the studio, but something that smells or sounds like home can help your baby settle in more quickly.

Music is another quiet helper; if there’s a song or playlist that makes your little one light up, we can play it during your session.

Outfits and Styling

All sessions include access to my curated client wardrobe of baby pieces, chosen for their textures, colors, and timeless design. Neutral tones, soft knits, and delicate patterns photograph beautifully and let your baby’s expressions shine.

If you’d like to include a personal outfit or sentimental accessory, feel free to bring it along I’ll help coordinate the styling so it feels cohesive with the overall look.

Relax and Enjoy the Experience

Every session at my Manhasset studio is guided from start to finish. I’ll handle posing, styling, and transitions so you can simply enjoy the moment. Babies pick up on our energy, so staying relaxed helps them stay relaxed too.

Remember the best images often come from the in-between moments a giggle, a stretch, a curious stare. Your job is to spend time with your baby and my job is to capture it all authentically

Your baby’s first portraits are more than photographs; they’re the beginning of your visual legacy. With thoughtful preparation and a gentle approach, every detail comes together to tell a story you’ll treasure forever.
