One of my favorite questions to get from families: "When should I book my baby's photos?" Honestly, I never get tired of it, because every stage genuinely has something special to document. The answer really depends on so many things, what is important to you and how you want to preserve these stages. Many parents choose to print a variety of the baby's first year sessions for their walls; others, only do milestones and like looking at them on their phones. Only you know how your images will speak to you most!

As a newborn and milestone photographer on Long Island, I photograph babies at every stage, from those first sleepy days through the chaos of a first birthday cake smash. This guide walks through the best ages for each type of session I offer through my milestone and newborn sessions, so you can plan ahead instead of looking back wishing you had.

Newborn Sessions: 5 to 14 Days Old

This window closes fast. Within the first two weeks, babies are deeply sleepy, still naturally curled, and much easier to gently settle into those soft, cozy poses. After about two weeks, babies get more alert, less cooperative with posing, and harder to soothe between shots. While I will take "newborns" through the first 60 days of life, those posed newborn portraits are very specifically a first-two-weeks thing.

The best thing you can do is book your session during pregnancy, around your second trimester. I hold a spot near your due date and we confirm once baby arrives. If baby comes a little early, you're covered. Same if you run into any unexpected hiccups.

Newborn sessions are untimed so there's no rushing! I allow for feeding breaks, outfit changes, and all the pauses a newborn requires. There's no rushing it, and that's exactly how it should be.

Sitter Sessions: 6 to 9 Months

This is the stage families most often underestimate and then wish they had captured. Around six to nine months, babies are sitting up independently and full of personality, but not yet mobile enough to make a session feel like a relay race. That combination is honestly a photographer's dream.

The expressions at this age are unlike anything else. Big open-mouth laughs, round cheeks that take up half the frame, tiny hands reaching for everything. I love the sitter session stage. I design each one around a theme or color palette, and they time beautifully as holiday card photos if you schedule around October or November.

If you're not sure whether to book a sitter session, this post breaks down the timing and what to expect.

First Birthday and Cake Smash: Around 12 Months

If there's a session that's pure joy from start to finish, it's the first birthday cake smash. I recommend scheduling between 11 and 13 months and no later than 6 weeks prior to your party. That gives us time to design the custom set and get your gallery ready to share before the celebration.

Every cake smash I do is fully customized. From the backdrop and props to the cake and outfit, it's all designed around your little one. We start with classic portraits, move into the cake portion, and finish with a quick tub splash (those tub photos are some of the best of the whole session, honestly). Some of my cake smash sessions have even been published in internationally viewed magazines, which never gets old.

This session books out quickly and it's never too early to reserve your spot! Given the custom nature I only take 4 cake smashes per month!

A Few More Moments Worth Capturing

The three sessions above are the most popular, but they're not the only ones worth marking:

  • Tummy time (3 to 4 months): wide eyes, a lifted head, those early attempts at a smile

    • Great for families who want portraits before the big milestone sessions

  • Crawling (9 to 10 months): movement, determination, and a stage that passes in a blink

    • A fun option for families who want something between the sitter and cake smash

  • Maternity: moms and their families love capturing the anticipation before baby arrives

    • I think this pairing with a newborn session tells the most complete story

There's no wrong time to pause and remember where your family is right now. That's the whole point.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What's the most important baby photo session to book on Long Island?

    • Most families consider the newborn session the highest priority since that 5-to-14-day window closes fast. After that, the first birthday cake smash is often next on the list. That said, the sitter session at 6 to 9 months captures a stage that families frequently wish they had documented.

  • How far in advance should I book a baby photo session on Long Island?

    • For newborn sessions, book during pregnancy, ideally around your second trimester. For milestones, as soon as baby is sitting, even if wobbly. For cake smashes, sessions need to happen 6 weeks before your target date so 3-4 months ahead of time is a good rule of thumb. For fall sessions, earlier is always better since September and October fill up fast.

  • Can I plan multiple baby sessions at once?

    • Yes, and many families do. Some plan a newborn session, sitter session, and cake smash all at once so availability is locked in. It also makes for a beautiful first-year gallery that tells the whole story from those first days to that first birthday.

  • What happens if my baby doesn't cooperate during the session?

    • That's exactly why none of my sessions are timed! Newborn sessions take as long as the baby needs to soothe and sleep. For older babies, we keep the energy relaxed and let them warm up on their own timeline. A little unpredictability is part of what makes these sessions real.

  • Is there a best time of year for outdoor baby photos on Long Island?

    • Late spring and early fall tend to offer the most beautiful light and comfortable temperatures here on Long Island. That said, my indoor studio sessions run year-round, so weather is never a barrier.

  • How do I know which session is right for my baby's age?

    • If you're not sure, just reach out. I'm happy to look at your baby's age, what you want to capture, and help you figure out the best fit. That conversation is completely free and no pressure.
