Top Mistakes to Avoid Before Your Newborn Photography Session
Preparing for a newborn session can feel overwhelming, especially in those early days when everything is new and constantly changing. Over the years, I’ve seen a few common misconceptions create unnecessary stress for parents before their session even begins.
The good news is that newborn photography does not require perfection. Avoiding these simple mistakes can make your experience feel far more relaxed and meaningful.

Mistake #1: Trying to Put Your Baby on a Schedule
One of the biggest misunderstandings about newborn sessions is the idea that babies need to follow a strict nap or feeding schedule beforehand.
Newborns do not operate on predictable routines, and that is completely normal. Sessions are designed to flow around your baby’s needs, whether that means feeding, soothing, or pausing when necessary. Flexibility is not just allowed, it is expected.
Trying to force a schedule often adds pressure where none is needed.
Mistake #2: Overthinking What Everyone Will Wear

Parents often worry that they need to plan outfits weeks in advance or purchase something new for the session.
My studio wardrobe includes carefully selected pieces for babies, mothers, and the entire family. Everything is designed to photograph beautifully together, creating a cohesive look without the stress of shopping or guessing what works.
This allows families to focus on connection rather than clothing decisions.

Mistake #3: Waiting Too Long to Book
Newborn sessions are ideally photographed within the first few weeks after birth, when babies are still naturally sleepy and curl easily into gentle poses.
Waiting until after baby arrives to inquire can limit availability, especially during busy seasons. Booking during pregnancy ensures flexibility and priority scheduling once your baby makes their debut.
If you are still expecting, pairing maternity and newborn sessions is a beautiful way to tell a complete story from anticipation to arrival.
Mistake #4: Assuming You Need a “Perfect” Baby
Babies cry. Babies need to eat. Babies need comfort.
None of these things are problems during a newborn session.
Sessions are unhurried and designed to move at your baby’s pace. Some of the most meaningful images happen between planned moments, when parents are soothing, holding, or simply being present with their newborn.
There is no expectation for perfection, only presence.

Mistake #5: Thinking Newborn Photos Are Only About the Baby
While your newborn is the heart of the session, these photographs are also about family connection.
Parents and siblings are gently included, creating images that tell a fuller story of this chapter. These are the photographs that often become heirlooms, passed down and revisited long after the newborn stage has passed.
A Thoughtful Approach to Newborn Photography
Newborn photography should feel supportive, welcoming, and intentionally paced. When expectations are aligned with how babies truly are, sessions become something families can enjoy rather than endure.
If you’re planning your own newborn session, I’d love to help you create something meaningful for your family.
